This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

I have had to -- temporarily, I hope -- adjust the settings here so people can't post comments without typing in those annoying word-verification tests. I didn't want to do that, but for the past couple weeks I've been utterly slammed by spambots; deleting one or two bogus comments in a day is merely an annoyance, but twenty or thirty each day is a full-fledged problem.

I'll turn off the word-verification thing in a week or two and see how that works. Also, I have adjusted my political beliefs just enough to favor the death penalty for spambot comment programmers. (However, people who merely copyedit the spam should be exempt unless prosecutors can prove criminal intent, which they wouldn't be able to do in my case.)

I was thinking that having convienent links to Japanese porno sites would be considered a feature benefit for frequenting your blog by some. Not me, of course, being a newly married (and happily so) man.

Actually, I was disappointed; not a single tentacle was to be found.

It is interesting what some people feel the need to disclaim...that's all I'm sayin, but I'm glad you're happily so.

Oddly enough, Cap'n, none of the spam went on the tentacle porn or phone sex threads (my two most popular threads by far, judging from the numbers who visit my blog every day after Googling search terms like "Japanese octopus porn" or "cheap phone sex"). I got dozens of Chinese or Japanese-language comments in the "Passport Finale" thread from last summer and tens of Cyrillic-alphabet comments in "Posting Comments? You Got Problems, Son"; last week I started getting huge numbers of semi-English comments in the comments for "Another Theological Posting."

Then, a couple days ago, I got a spam comment on the blog's front page -- on the post about my father, no less -- and THAT pissed me right the hell off so I changed my blog settings to require word verification.

And here on my own blog I have to type the word "tajtabo" before I can comment. GodDAMMIT.

Wait: apparently "tajtabo" wasn't the word after all, and my new word looks like "suburho." Let's try this again.

And now that I'm all logged in as the Official Blogmistress, I don't have to type passwords anymore. Woo hoo! I belong to an elite with Privileges!

Good to see you again, Moose. How've you been?

Yes, Moose, I wondered what had happened to you. We never see Anne O'Neimaus around here anymore either.
