Its Glory Is All Moonshine

Not long after we invaded Iraq I started seeing stories which suggested that life for everyday Iraqi civilians actually got worse after we liberated them.

But it used to be you couldn’t say that without being shouted down by patriotic red-staters who accused you of being a Bush-hater who opposed the war from the get-go. And in my case such accusations are true. So I stopped talking about it after awhile. Hell, by now I probably wouldn’t say anything bad about the lot of Iraq’s civilians even if there were death squads roaming the streets of Baghdad murdering said civilians.

But I don’t mind quoting the U.S. Army:

U.S. commanders in Baghdad are focused on cracking down on Iraqi death squads responsible for killing hundreds of citizens in the capital in recent months, a military spokesman said Monday.

Doesn't make your post any less accurate.

The word is that Sistani is near to giving up on a unified Iraq under the current government. If Sistani gives up, it's over, because he's the only one keeping the Shia population from engaging in a full-scale civil war with the Sunnis. I heard another Iraqi official say that "the Iraq experiment is done."

The U.S. should have kept its focus on Afghanistan. Think of all the good that would have resulted: the world would have remained united behind our effort, the capture or killing of Bin Laden would have been more likely, and we could have spent a fraction of the money we have wasted in Iraq to help build infrastructure and good will with the Afghani people. Instead, we have squandered the support of the world, let Bin Laden off the hook, and used up billions of dollars, thousands of American lives, and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives, for what will amount to nothing more that a prelude to a humanitarian tragedy that will overtake Darfur in deaths and destabilize a region essential to the American economy.

With that sunny summation, the picture is of me and my adopted daughter in Guatemala, on the first day I saw her. : )

Sunni, Shia.... what is this the difference between the American synod and the missouri synod of the lutherans?

I've not seen or even heard of so much and fists flying between these two. What makes the camal jocks so much more valuable to mankind?

Cheer for the week.

Jews jews that's our team go go jews and beat them HBZ's

Yeah that did not work.

Oh well.

As long as wel all know it's Hillary's fault, nothing else matters.

"with Sunni Muslim gunmen targeting Shia neighborhoods, and Shiite attackers going after Sunnis."

Seems that maybe one side or the other ought to give up and committ hari cari?

OR

As I read other world news about the peacful people of Islam, it seems that the deranged amongst the populace seems to be Sunni.

SO

maybe it's the Sunni that need to be sent off for their virgins, en mass!

I think the Sunni-Shia divide has to do with who gets to be the Muslim equivalent of clergy: one group says anyone can do so, while the other group says only direct descendants of Mohammed can.
